Background

Store backups in multiple places. This way, if a problem happens in one place, you still have copies in other places. Avoid storing backups on the server, because if the server fails, you lose the website and all backups.

Cloud services are a good option to store backups. An advantage of UpdraftPlus over similar plugins is that the free version allows us to store backups in cloud services, like Google Drive and Dropbox. This is a premium feature in most backup and migration plugins.

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes that UpdraftPlus is installed and active on your website. Check this tutorial if you need help on how to install and activate a plugin in WordPress.

Steps

Follow these steps to configure Google Drive as a storage option in UpdraftPlus. Other options are configured similarly.

Step 1: Navigate to Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups.

Step 2: Go to the Settings tab and click Google Drive. UpdraftPlus shows a section immediately below to configure the connection to Google Drive.

Step 3: Scroll down and click Save Changes.

Step 4: On the window just shown, click the button to begin the authorization procedure with Google.

Step 5: Authorize access to your Google Drive. At the final step of the wizard, click Complete setup.

Step 6: On the Settings tab, verify that Google Drive is selected and configured. From now, you can save your backups to Google Drive and you can restore your website from a backup in Google Drive.

Limitations

The free version of UpdraftPlus supports various remote storages, but you can use only one. If you want to use multiple storages, you must buy this add-on.

There are other limitations. For example, you can use Google Drive but you cannot choose the destination folder. Buy UpdraftPlus Premium to eliminate these restrictions.
